The session began with a general introduction, followed by an examination of contemporary challenges, with particular focus on globalization, the Anthropocene, and an overview of GDP distribution over the past 2,000 years. This was complemented by an overview of the art markets, including their geographical distribution and turnover, as well as a discussion of the dominant scientific paradigms in the social sciences and humanities today, namely post-positivist and postmodern approaches. The course plan was then briefly outlined, including the schedule of study visits. Assessment procedures were explained and are divided equally between an individual test, scheduled for 5 January (50%), and group assignments (50%), which consist of two debate sessions to be held on 5 and 12 December, with the submission of the associated texts required by 16 and 30 November.
