Early career development and academic entrepreneurship
18 Novembro 2025, 14:00 • Francisco Alexandre Melo Simões
Academic entrepreneurship broadly refers to the involvement of academics – teachers, researchers, students - in exploitation activities. In this context, entrepreneurship refers to the exploration of knowledge that academics create via applied research projects and further development of research networks, patents, licenses, start-ups, spin-offs, and industry collaboration. Individual-level motives – meaning those driving academic agency - have been pointed out to be the best predictors of academic entrepreneurship. If properly integrated into research and development activities, academic entrepreneurship can also represent an important set of skills for developing solid research careers.
Based on active, participatory methodologies, this seminar will explore the concept of academic entrepreneurship by combining three angles on analysis. Firstly, the group will engage in exploring the meaning(s) of academic entrepreneurship, including its added-value and pitfalls. Secondly, the discussions will focus on the process of developing a research idea as the central piece for any academic entrepreneurship process. This will include a step-by-step analysis of translating a research idea into a research project, including a practical, hands-on approach to this process (do’s, don’ts, and tips). Finally, the group will debate how entrepreneurial skills can be combined with other sets of skills (e.g., scientific skills, communication skills) from a research career pathway developed from early stages.
