Diversity as a challenge: Ingroup projection revisited

Opening Lecture of the PhD programme

In 1999 Mummendey and Wenzel published their approach to intergroup (in)tolerance, which was later dubbed the ingroup projection model. This approach re-conceptualized ethnocentrism through a rigorous application of self-categorization theory to the understanding of intergroup relations. Since then research has tested most of their main hypotheses and developed the approach further in terms of contextual determinants and different underlying processes. Moreover, their approach has inspired colleagues from different labs and has been applied to real-life intergroup contexts all over the world. I will take you on a journey exploring what has happened with that idea in the last 20 years, thereby illustrating the theoretical and practical relevance and timeliness of old fashioned basic research in our field.
