Facial Feedback in Emotion Perception

Presentation given by Sebastian Korb, University of Essex
Does proprioceptive feedback from our own facial muscles influence the way we perceive and recognise emotions in others? What are the characteristics and neural correlates of facial responses to emotional stimuli and rewards, and how are they modulated by situational, neural and neurochemical factors? I will present some of my past work relative to these point (mostly using facial EMG, in combination with TMS, fMRI, and pharmacology), which are central to the facial feedback hypothesis and to theories of embodied cognition. Moreover, I will discuss current attempts to provide proprioceptive input to facial muscles using electric stimulation.
