The Far Right Today: Challenges for Democracy and Academia

Until January 20, when Donald Trump reluctantly vacated the White House, almost one quarter of the world population lived under a far-right leader. The far right today is neither the world-destroying fascism of your (great) grandparents nor the marginalized radical right of your parents (youth). The far right is a major player in global politics, either in government or among the main opposition parties in most European countries, while fast learning and adapting to the changing political context. At the same time, both the academic and public debate remains stuck in "received wisdom" based on the 1930s or 1990s, not adapting to the radically changing reality of far right politics. In this lecture, I will present the main insights of my recent book, "The Far Right Today" (2019)*, and will specifically address some of the key challenges the "fourth wave" poses for the academic study of both far right and mainstream politics.

Cas Mudde is the Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF Professor of International Affairs in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia (USA) as well as an adjunct professor in the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the University of Oslo (Norway).
