Applying Management Models: The Hovey & Beard Company Case Study

In this session, students worked in groups on the Hovey & Beard Company case study, applying different management models and theories to analyse organisational challenges, employee motivation, leadership, and productivity. Through collaborative discussions and group presentations, they examined the limitations of traditional management approaches, the importance of employee participation and communication, and the role of flexibility in managerial decision-making. Students also discussed how other employees might react to the outcomes of the experiment and compared the case with Robert Owen’s approach to employee welfare, identifying similarities and differences in the evolution of management thought. The session encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and the practical application of theoretical management concepts to real organisational situations.
