The Sociology of W.E.B Du Bois and Critical race theory and structural racism

26 Outubro 2023, 16:00 Nuno Nunes

In this lecture, we consider Du Bois as one of the founders of sociology. We investigate both his founding of empirical sociology in the United States, but more explicitly his commitment to global, historical, and comparative critiques of racism and colonialism. We will consider whether Du Bois can be read as a ‘decolonial’ figure, and also delve into some of his writings from the digitalized archive held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

This lecture will look at the development of critical race theory withing the United States and internationally. We will consider its genesis in the post civil rights era, and the extent to which it moved successfully from critical legal studies into sociology and social theory. We will then consider the racialized social systems approach, using both historical and contemporary examples, questioning whether critical race theory ties together the micro, meso, and macro levels of society.

Modernity/coloniality and colonial imperialism

25 Outubro 2023, 16:00 Nuno Nunes

In this lecture, we will consider the decolonial critique of modernity/coloniality. In this critique, decolonial scholars critique both Eurocentric theories of modernity, but also critique modernity itself as being a ‘rhetoric’ that hides the darker side of coloniality. We will then excavate the theory of coloniality, analyzing the coloniality of being, knowledge, and power, drawing on both historical and contemporary examples. This lecture will also engage with disparate intellectual traditions such as Black Marxists, and Black radicals.
