Overview of participatory vs conventional evaluation - key differences to then set out the key principles and theories of participatory evaluation. Idenitfied advantages and challenges of PE, also in humanitarian settings, before zooming into empowerment evaluation and its 10 principles (Fetterman). Intoduction of community mapping as a tool and the request to prepare a 'university mapping' as a participatory exercise to be discussed in the next class.

The lectures outlined in brief the humanitarian aid architecture on global level and the three main events that informed the development (2005, 2012, 2016). More insights were provided in the operationalisation of clusters, their purpose and members.

Use of video for further insights on the need for true partnership and localisation of HA.

The second part of the class focused on diversity and intersectionality. The PowerWalk, a participatory exercise, was conducted with all students which followed by discussion and overview of the intersectionality wheel. Reference made to Crenshaw and Lila Abu-Lughod on empowerment of the marginalised.

The course was introduced as part of the wider Humanitarian Action work in the University including HUMACT and INOVHUMRE. An invitation was extended for students to register for participation in an intensive study programme in Turkey as part of the INOVHUMRE project.

Thereafter the course module was introduced and methods in teaching including objectives and overall outline of the course.

The second half of the lesson focused on ensuring all students had a similar understanding of HA, its operations, guiding principles and standards as well as the key challenges that affect it. Through a final video the relation between evaluation, HA was made.
