This laboratorial class details how to create script files to create and destroy virtualized network topologies. The students will also learn how to deploy and test a more complex network topology than the one experimented in the last laboratory (L2). In addition, Linux traffic control (tc) tool is used to emulate more realistic testing scenarios when ARP and ICMP messages are exchanged through the network topology.

This class aims to give a clear understanding of the operational similarities between Network Operating Systems (NOSs) and Software Defined Networking (SDN), focusing on the three design levels: management, control, and data planes. Understanding both paradigms is essential for network management in both traditional and modern network environments. In the final part of this class is also presented the next laboratory.

First laboratory session for students being introduced to the Linux Virtual Machine. Practice the concepts of Linux Network namespaces, bridge and network links. Test the topology with ping command and analyze the traffic captured via tcpdump.

Class introduction. Legacy vs. SDN-based network. Three levels of a SDN-based system. SDN advantages and disadvantages. Network emulation building a network topology with Linux shell commands.
