Lecture 5: Environment and Climate Crisis (21 October 2024)

21 Outubro 2024, 15:30 Antonio Maria Pusceddu

This class provided an overview of the relationship between development and environmental crises from an anthropological perspective. It introduced and discussed the debate on the Anthropocene and the link between carbon emissions and global/social inequalities. It also discussed the problematic nexus between development and sustainability, bringing critical insights from anthropological investigation on the need to reframe "sustainability" through categories of difference. Finally, it discussed the energy transition and the emergence of new development imaginaries, which were illustrated through the presentation of two ethnographies on the expansion of renewable energies in Mexico.
