The fifth class of the module Europe as a Global Actor continued the topic from the previous week, examining the EU's policy towards migration. We started the lecture with a discussion on different perceptions of refugees by country, time-period, and country of origin. We then proceeded to analyse some key topics in relation to migration into the EU, namely: erecting walls and barriers, IT solutions and the problem of datafication, affluent migration and golden visas. We then covered the political, security, and military toolboxes at EU's disposal, looking at some specific documents, such as the Schengen Agreement or the EU-Turkey agreement, as well as critically examining the role of FRONTEX and the CSDP missions.

The fourth class of the module Europe as a Global Actor was dedicated to examining the EU's policy towards migration. We started the lecture with a discussion of the EU Strategic Compass, summarizing its main points, adavntages and disadvantages. We then proceeded to critically analyse some visual metaphors of migration current in the European media. Next, we defined the key terms (migrant, immigrant/emigrant, refugee, asylum seeker, IDP etc.) and looked at some statistical data on the routes, entry points, and demographics of migration into the EU. We also touched upon the main points of the asylum application process and outcomes.
